Thought for the day

The thought that predominates at the time of death, lays the foundation on whic

From the book: Wisdoms Mine

Question: Amma, what about helping others? Should my learning not be of use to them? What about compassion?

Answer: Mere learning is not enough. Wisdom is born through practice. Have compassion for your own self. How much you are suffering. First you realise yourself. You talk about others suffering. Can the blind lead the blind?

Question: Amma, you said that whatever happens, happens for our good. So, why should we try and change to become good?

Answer: You should make an effort. Discriminate between what is good and what is bad. Have constant awareness. Every second you should watch your thoughts. First, the feeling arises followed by the thought. Before you take action, discriminate as to whether it is right or wrong. Will it take you to God? If not, cut it at the thought level.

The Guru's advice...Once a guru told his disciples: god is in everything. So, why worry when God is omnipresent. Later in the evening, as a disciple was walking on the street an elephant broke away from its mahout and came charging towards him. The mahout yelled: "Hey, get out of the way!" The man remembering his guru's words, ignored the call and waited for the elephant to pass him by. The elephant knocked him down. The next day he limped back for satsang. "What happened to you?" said the guru. The disciple told about the elephant incident saying: "You told us God was in everything and He is always with us..."The guru replied, the mahout is God also, he warned you". Therefore, discriminate before taking action.

Question: What sadhana do you perform in your ashram, Mukthi Nilayam?

Answer: At the end of every day after we have finished our daily program, we ask each other a list of questions. For example, did you get angry or impatient today? Did you hurt anyone by thought, word or deed? How much of the day did you think about God? This same principle I also taught to my children. This helps us purify ourselves. It is of no use to just chant and meditate. We have to transform ourselves. Then alone are we eligible to call ourselves devotees. Swami says: "Help Ever, Hurt Never". What is the help? LOVING EVER. We should not hurt others through our actions, but also through our thoughts. It creates bad vibrations and pollutes the atmosphere.
